On Septemeber 21, 2009 Nick Cave & Warren Ellis, composers of The English Surgeon's soundtrack, are releasing White Lunar , a double CD comprising of soundtrack music they've compsed for The English Surgeon, The Proposition and The Assassination of Jesse James (among others). Read an excerpt from Subba Cultcha's review of White Lunar below:

"In 2007, Cave and Ellis scored Geoffrey Smith’s harrowing The English Surgeon, a film tracing Dr. Henry Marsh’s struggle to bring neurosurgery to post-Soviet Ukraine. Amplifying the enterprising doctor’s frustrations and anxieties, his practical genius and ethical dread, the music sighs and whines like the surgical instruments Marsh shanghais from the NHS."

The English Surgeon begins a one week engagement in Los Angeles on July 31st at Laemmle Theatre .

The English Surgeon begins a theatrical run in New York City on July 24th at Cinema Village

2008

October 27th - It is a very busy time for the film at the moment having been to the Hamptons International Film Festival, Cinema Verite in Tehran and DocLisboa in October, and now Doc Leipzig, Belgrade, Sevilla Film Festival, CPH in Copenhagen and then the biggest Doc festival in the world, IDFA in Amsterdam. We had a special IDFA screening for the public on Oct 26th as part of promoting the Festival, and HOTDOCS is kicking off its Canadian tour of the best documentaries from around the world with a Gala screening in Calgary on Nov 5th with brain surgeon Henry Marsh in attendance.

August 18th - WOW! Brand new website.

August 13th - Opening night's speaker at the Danish TV Festival in Copenhagen. In front of an audience of documentary makers, I was interviewed at length by Eva Mulvad who made a wonderful film called "Enemies of Happiness". James Marsh followed with "Man on Wire"...

August 9th - Packed out open air screening in Prizren, Kosovo as part of a great Festival here called Dokufest. During the screening we had a noisy fight from two huge tom cats under the screen, and then just as the operation was starting, the local mosque had it's amplified call to prayer which just added to the atmosphere. Priceless...

July 26th - Very surprised to win the Best International Feature documentary prize tonight. And in front of about 1,800 people...

July 24th - Visiting the stunning city of Guanajuato in Mexico as part of the Expression en Corto festival. This town is magical - full of underground tunnels, baroque buildings and fantastic street life.

March 27th - Q&A with director Geoffrey Smith & neurosurgeon Henry Marsh on YouTube. Click to watch.
